Hero?
What exactly is a hero? I dont know. I do know its not the things you see in movies or comic books. Heros, real heros are people who go by every day doing good things and never really getting any recognition.
A hero is someone who gets up on their day off to go volunteer at a soup kitchen. A hero is someone who donates a kidney or blood with no expectations of anything in return. A hero is a bone marrow doner. A hero is someone who goes out of their way to help a neighbor in need. Someone who will go and join habitat for humanity and give up their weekends for a month to build a house for a needy family. A hero is someone who will donate animals so they arent put to sleep, and care for and love them for the rest of their life. A hero does the right things when they dont have to.
I certainly am no hero, no matter how many times I tried to play one. And Twilight I am impressed what you once did. You acted on instinct and saved a life. Thats more than most will ever do in their pitiful existence.
So many of us will just do what we want and never really think about anyone else. We will hurt others, we will be selfish and only care about what we want. We’re self righteous and convenient when it suits us, we are unaware of the rest of the world and we really dont care whats happening unless it directly affects us. And when it does affect us we become crusaders for that cause and wont stop till we get our way. Like I said, selfish, and then some.
I have never pretended to be much more than what I am. A single dad. And my crusading days are over, if they ever began. No I can honestly say that I am as self involved as anyone, and even worse I excuse it as that I have no help and can barely manage. I dont have to be a hero everyday, but I can at least try to be a better person. And theres no excuse for it. None.
So thank you Twilight for your kind words but I think you have me confused with someone else. I am not the person you think I am. And though I wish it were true, the sad fact is I am nothing that you think I am. I am just me, and maybe that might be enough. But I honestly dont think that it is. I should be better than I am. So many people have told me that I should push myself to be better, and while they may have meant the ring, I took it as be better in life overall. Be better in every aspect of my life and I can maybe reach a new height that has always eluded me thus far.
Heros there are plenty of in this world. From the doctor going out to the ghettos and giving free medical help to the lawyer living a meager life and donating almost all his earnings. They are rare people but they exist and we should all strive to be heros but be happy just to be better people. Be better and you cant go wrong in life. At least thats how I see it.
