The scene is a small diner on the lower east side of San Antonio’s warehouse district. The places around here are mostly production places and shipping, it has 2 places to eat and one gas station and that is pretty much it for a few miles. I am eating lunch at 11am in the morning, because as soon as 12pm hits there is no where to sit, the place gets packed up until 2pm. But for now the place is a ghost town.
Which is fine with him.
He is wearing jeans, a white tshirt, his short blond hair unkempt and a bit unwashed seems to flow naturally. He had to drive 20 minutes to get here but that was fine, it was good to get out of the house and try to get him mind off some things. It did not work.
I sit by the corner of the tiny place, looking out the window but not really looking. Just kind of staring out into nothing. His mind has been gone as of late. But that was too be expected considering the news he’d received not long ago.
You never know how much you care for someone till they are no longer around. You never know how much they mean to you till they are gone. Its awful, but that's how it usually works.
And worried he has been.
Family is family, be it via blood or not. Those you call family will always be family. No matter what. And you always protect your family. Always.
But what if you cant protect them? What if you cant help them? No more than you could help yourself. I cant save myself, I cant save him, its Shadow all over again.
The thought makes him sad. And yet here I am trying to think. Hoping my mind doesn't fail me again. But I know it will. I always seem to fail when it matters most. That's just been the story of my life. God seems to have it out for me and mine.
A waitress dressed in just reg clothes comes up to me and hands me a menu. I say thank you. She asks what I would like to drink? I say Pepsi or coca cola, that it densest matter. A minute or two later she brings me a large glass with ice filled up with Pepsi. I take a drink. She askes me if I am ready to order? I say Id like a plate of chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and wheat toast. She says “good choice”, most everyone orders burgers and a simple burger and fries here is 11 bucks, I wonder if they ever heard of burger king, our burgers are not that good that they pay 11 bucks for it. She laughs and walks away, ten minutes later the food is in front of me. She asks if I would like any condiments, I ask for tobasco and I have it on my table in few seconds. She leaves me to it.
All of a sudden I am not very hungry. I thought I would be hungry, but I am not. I take a few bites and drink most of my soda. I call the waitress over and ask for a to go box so I can take my food home. She nods and a minute later she brings me a box and the check. I say thank you. She asks me if I would like a refill of my soda before I leave? I say sure why not. She brings me a new soda. I give her my check with the money and a tip included. She smiles and thanks me and again she walks away. Simple place yet efficient. I like that. I remember why I've come here a few times. I like it here.
Soon it is 12 pm and the lunch crowd from the warehouses start too trickle in. I get up and walk outside to the warm caress of the sun.
It is very warm today. Summers in Texas are always pretty rough. Heat indexes go through the roof.
And its just best to stay indoors when you can. I pity those who work outside, its not a safe place to work during the summer months.
Jude gets to his car and gets in, turning the keys with his right hand and turning the ignition on. Soon he is on his way home with the car AC blasting full strength.
His mind turns to Twilight for a moment. Twilight an old familiar face. An old friend, well as much of a friend as one like Jude could have.
Twilight is an interesting character. He has lived many lifetimes, and most if not all interesting to say the least. He has lived through important times in history and paid a price, paid a very high price each and every single time.
I can relate, I’ve paid a high price for many things in my life, whether they be my choice or not. That's just how life always is. Life is unfair. Always.
So Twilight, I want you to know that I am not alright. I hope you understand. I need to get my mind right, and get away from this disease that is following me and consuming me. And as much as I like and respect you. I need this match. And so I will not let up on Titans. I will not take it easy. I just wanted to give you a heads up and warn you before hand. I hope you understand.
The scene fades with Jude driving through I35 going 75 mph and en route to his home. Home.
Home is where the heart is.
