The day is cloudy. It has been raining since dawn. I like the rain. Washes away the filth, lets me feel clean again. At least for a little while.
There is a flickering light on my answering machine. I dont have to check my message, I know who it is.
I am home. I dont feel at ease. I walk over to my cd player and hit play. I dont remember what was in it, its been so long since I turned it on. Since Shadow died really. And I think it was him who would listen to it. I am curious now. Wonder what will play. I lift my left hand turn on the deck and hit play.
And I wait for a second, it seems like the longest second of my life, but I know I have had longer. The music starts and the song that plays brings back exactly what the singer says, pain. Nothing but pain.
There's a little black spot on the sun today
It's the same old thing as yesterday
There's a black hat caught in the high tree top
There's a flag pole rag and the wind won't stop
I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain
There's a little black spot on the sun today, that's my soul up there
It's the same old thing as yesterday, that's my soul up there
There's a black hat caught in a high tree top, that's my soul up there
There's a flag pole rag and the wind won't stop, that's my soul up there
I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain
There's a fossil that's trapped in a high cliff wall, that's my soul up there
There's a dead salmon frozen in a waterfall, that's my soul up there
There's a blue whale beached by a springtide's ebb, that's my soul up there
There's a butterfly trapped in a spider's web, that's my soul up there
I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain
There's a king on a throne with his eyes torn out
There's a blind man looking for a shadow of doubt
There's a rich man sleeping on a golden bed
There's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread
There's a red fox torn by a huntmen's pack, that's my soul up there
There's a black winged gull with a broken back, that's my soul up there
There's a little black spot on the sun today
It's the same old thing as yesterday
I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain
King of pain
King of pain, king of pain, I always be king of pain.
Shadow always had a way of picking a song that meant something. I usually chose something that I could remember. Something popular, something in the moment. But he, he always chose songs that meant something. Songs that said something. Songs that spoke. Spoke to the heart, the soul, the mind. I miss that.
I miss him very much. What I dont miss is who sent me this postcard.
Jude raises his right hand it has a red postcard on it. Nothing is written on it. Simply has his address and it was postmarked in Reno, Nevada. That alone was enough for me to know who it is. He is sending me a message. And message received loud and clear. There is not enough room in this world for the both of us, much less in SFT.
So listen up, I wont speak your name, you havent earned the right. You dont get to come back when you feel like it, when you want to. This isnt our world, this isnt how the world works. Do you get that? Are you hearing me?
King of Pain.
