There days in our lives that feel too fast, as if we wake up one moment and next thing we know we are going back to sleep. Then there are other days, worse days in which time moves ever so slowly. And no matter how much you try and fast forward through it, it never happens.
The world seems to come to a halt and we never recover from it. I am Redd. I have never had much love for the world and anyone in it. Well most everyone. Cept for save 2 or 3.
Today the Sister and I are walking through the park on our way to the local Cracker Barrel, off to have a nice lunch and some chicken fried chicken. On our way though we are talking, she always wants to talk. There are not many kids in the park this afternoon. School started today and so there are few people here this early in the day. A new mother sits under an oak tree near the far side of the park. She has a little bag with several Tupperware dishes in them. I smile. They look perfect together.
Nun: How much do you remember from when you were young?
Redd: Not much, and not that I would want to remember?
Nun: Oh Redd, you should know by now we remember the past so that we never forget, or else we’re doomed to repeat it.
Redd: or we forget the past and we move on.
Nun: Touche.
Redd: When you were little did you want to be a Nun?
Nun: oh heavens no, I wanted to be a ballerina.
Redd (laughing): Really?
Nun: Oh yes I love to dance. It was my first love. But alas I didn't have the grace or skill to pursue it seriously. I was an ugly duckling, well as far as dancing went.
Redd: What made you take this route?
Nun: Oh I don't know, why does anyone take the road less traveled? In my life I have been to 8 different countries, I saw the world, I saw all manners of beauty in this world, and horrors too. When you take a step back out of your own life and onto another, you see that there is so much that needs to be done. So I did it.
Redd: Any regrets?
She pauses and looks at the young mother feeding her baby some baby food under that oak tree.
Nun: A devout nun would say no, but an honest one like myself would say yes. There are somethings that I would of loved to have been.
Redd: you'd have made a great mother.
She looks at me and with a genuine smile says “Thank you”.
We keep walking and up ahead two teenagers, one boy and one girl walk up to us and ask me for an autograph. I sign their papers (the girl asks if she is my mother, we laugh and say “close enough” and we keep on walking.
Nun: Sometimes I forget I am walking next to a celebrity.
Redd (rolling eyes): The price of fame
(We laugh together)
Nun: Whose up next?
Redd: Robert Saints.
Nun: I like his name.
Redd: I knew you would.
Nun: Why are you still doing this?
Redd: Why do you ask me that every week?
Nun: maybe one day your answer will be different.
Redd: You made a promise to god and Christ didn't you?
Nun: yes.
Redd: I made a promise too.
Nun: He’s gone, you are relieved of your word, your honor is in tact.
Redd: That’s not how it works, that's not how I work. What would I even do anyway? This is all I know.
Nun: But that isn't all that you are. You are allowed to have a life, your life must go on. Live it. Free yourself.
Redd: No.
Nun: So are you going to spend your time fighting Roberts, and Rumpkes, and Emerson’s the rest of your days.
Redd: God willing yes, wrestlers these days fight well into their 60’s.
Nun: Oh Redd, look you don't really want to face Robert Saints.
Redd: And yet face him I will.
Nun: No use talking to you when you are like this. Lets just go have lunch.
Redd: Agreed.
And so we walk the rest of the way without saying a word to each other.
…...Fade…...
