There is a creak as the door opens from her room. Her frail stature stands there at the open doorway. She has on white pajamas and she looks even thinner than before. I feel responsible for her. And as my responsibility I will not allow her to fade at least not quite yet. God can wait.
Nun: What are you doing?
Redd: What does it look like? I’m making breakfast?
Nun: You cant keep me here forever.
Redd: You’ve only been here 2 days.
Nun: I have places to go.
Redd: yeah like where?
Nun: I need to get my things in order, and get to the hospice.
Redd: Stay a little longer, then I’ll take you where ever you want to go.
Nun: A few more days then?
(I smile, I am going to really miss her, so many years hating her for no reason. Resenting her more than hate I would say)
Nun: What are you making?
Redd: Eggs and bacon.
Nun: Need any help?
Redd: I have destroyed 7 eggs, either help me make them over easy or we are having scrambled eggs.
(she laughs, and I laugh)
She walks over and flips her white hair behind her shoulders and takes over the duties. I put the bacon on a plate and start putting napkins to soak out all the oil and fat. She easily flips the eggs on the pan and has 2 ready to go, she puts them on a plate and cracks 2 more eggs open and starts to work on 2 more. I start the toaster oven and put wheat bread in as I start the toast. After a few minutes we are sitting down and ready for breakfast.
(I put ketchup, butter and Tabasco sauce on the table, there is already a salt and pepper shaker on the table. I put a lot of butter on my bread)
Nun: You want any toast with that butter?
Redd: Not funny, maybe you should try it? Its not like its gonna hurt you anymore.
Nun: (laughing) you’re right, give me that tub of butter over here.
(she puts as much butter as I do and we have a good breakfast)
Redd: What would you like to do today?
Nun: How about we go watch a movie?
Redd: A movie? Sure, what would you like to watch?
Nun: I want to see The Nun.
Redd: You know that's a horror movie?
Nun: Aww man? Really?
Redd: Yes really and I dont think I’ve ever heard you say “man” before.
Nun: ugh ok how about Aquaman, that looks awesome.
Redd: Sure and after that we’ll pick up some lunch.
Nun: Sounds like a perfect day.
(I get up and start clearing the dishes, and she starts to help, I know she wants to feel useful so I let her)
As I am washing dishes she is drying them.
Nun: Who are you facing next week?
Redd: Emerson.
Nun: Oh I like him.
Redd: Everyone does.
Nun: A man who takes care of his family is god on the lips of his children.
Redd: yea, I know.
Nun: That could have been you at one time.
Redd: I dont want to hurt him.
Nun: isn't he the world champion? Isn't he the one who could hurt you.
(I give her a look)
Nun: Oh excuse me you are the big bad Redd, no one can hurt you.
Redd: I can be beaten, I lost to Reno last week.
Nun: Sure you did and gives me a wink.
Redd: I couldn't get back in the ring my knee was hurting.
Nun: uh huh ok, and this next week you’ll hurt your back. Just admit it, you like Emerson and you dont want to fight him.
Redd: I dont. But I have to.
Nun: You have never had to do anything in your life, in this world and in God’s we always have a choice.
Redd: lets get ready for the movie, im gonna shower and change and we’ll leave in half hour.
Nun: Fine but this conversation is not over.
Redd: Fine
We retreat to our respective rooms.
