No Roads Home.
The year is 1145 AD. We are living in Rome. My father is a merchant seaman. A fisherman of sorts. He sells his catches and trades as well for other goods. He made a good living. He took care of his family. When I was 9 he took me on a short trip with him on the ship he worked on. I remember standing on deck with him one fine sunny day. He told me the ocean was vast and wide with many wonders and horrors. He then pointed at me, and said I was the same as the ocean. I pretended I didn't understand what he was talking about. But I did. He told me that I was his son in blood, but that I belonged to others many others. He said he could see it in my eyes when I was a baby. Even back then. I was an odd child he said. Always looking at where Id been never looking at where I was going. He said that as a young child I would have nightmares and talk about things that I should not know, I would sometimes speak in a language long since forgotten or from another continent. He said that I could have been his father in another life but today I was his son. And asked that I heed his words. He told me most people wouldn't be able to understand me, or what I was. He asked I keep my secrets. He said I should stop looking for death, because would find me soon enough.
He said that I didn't need to damn myself, that I deserved better. My father was a wise man. I wish I could of known him better. He had seen a lot of the world, both good and bad. And when he saw me, he really saw me. A lost soul inside a childs body. Wanting to go home but afraid of it.
A few years later my father would get sick, very sick, he died soon after but one of the last things he told me was that there was no roads home. All roads would lead me to where I needed to be. He said I was a wanderer. But that he was proud to have called me son. A few hundred years later I found him in Jeville. He did not recognize me at first. We sat and drank coffee and shared stories, he was glad to finally see me as I was, son of none, but he still called me his son.
And I tell this story with a bit of sadness in me. I have lost so many parents. So many loved ones and I never really knew too many of them. And the fathers and mothers we know, they define us. They make us who we are, but I have been son to many and too many have molded me.
You see Emerson when I see and hear you talk about your son, it reminds me what kind of man you are. You are a man who would move heaven and earth for his son. And your world crumbles each year and you grow closer to the realization that you are powerless to save him. Try as you might. Your son will one day have to face the world alone and make his way, even with his disabilities it is his life to live. But you are preparing him. Good for you.
And through all that you do, you still find time to show others who you are. Everyone whose ever faced you comes away thinking what I think. “I wish you could be my father”. And on Titans win or lose I will be happy either way, if I win I am champion, if I lose you are champion. And I will be happy with either outcome.
That is all.
