The scene is Marin, Georgia. 11Am on Monday July 9. I have an old friend here. She is still alive. Though she is 92 years old. She simply goes by the name Sister Mary or better known in SFT circles as The Nun.
She has a small apartment above a conservatory. She has been here for some years. Studying, counseling, helping. She has never been my friend. But she is a beacon. And all moths are drawn to the light.
I knock on the gray door twice. After maybe 5 seconds or so the door opens. It is a young woman maybe 20 yeas old. She reminds me of someone but I cant place where. She has on a gray suit type dress, the types only nuns would wear.
Jude: I am here to see
Nun: I know who you are here to see. Come in please.
Jude: My name is
Nun: I know your name. But my name is Susana.
Jude: Pleased to meet you
Nun: Likewise, follow me.
We walk down a narrow corridor. The conservatory is just a small complex, like an apartment building but really maybe 4 rooms are within. There is a common room with a TV, books, and a ping pong table of all things. There is a common kitchen with a small fridge and stove.
It is what I expected. The nun is sitting by some large windows looking out over the yard. She looks haggard and old. Good. As I approach she turns in our direction and gives us a small smile.
“You two look quite good together. Susana, you could be with someone like Jude, or Jude himself, he is single.”
Susana laughs a small nervous laugh.
Jude: Good to see you too.
Nun: oh please skip the pleasantries. You like me about as much as a kick to your nono region.
Jude: That's not true, I like you about as much as a root canal.
We both laugh at that.
Nun: Don't mind Susana, shes not a nun yet, she hasn't taken her vow. But I have been trying to tell her that God will love her no matter what she decides. But I think she was meant for more. To be a wife and a mother, there is nothing that can compare to a full life. Should she choose the life of a nun, well she will end up like me. Alone. Old. And sitting out on life and looking out a window waiting for God to call her home. Its no life, its not anything.
Susana looks away, then looks at me, and I see something in her eyes. Hope maybe, I am not sure. She has light brown hair, her pale green eyes look almost as if her eyes were from someone else. She has a nice figure though she tries and hides it like all nuns do. And for a moment I think about her and I and what might be. But I quickly dismiss it. This is simply a diversion from the nun. And I will have non of it.
Jude: I don't have time for your games.
Nun: Time is all I have left my boy.
Jude: you know why I am here, so tell me.
Nun: You want to know if he’s been here.
Jude: Yes.
Nun: He has not. I have not seen your brother for over a year.
Jude: He has always held contact with you. Even back in the old Legion days.
Nun: Times change. Once in a while he’ll seek out my counsel. Unlike yourself.
Jude: I don't need your counsel old woman.
Nun: Yes you do, you’re just more stubborn than your brother.
Jude: it is because of you that we had two so called Holy Wars in SFT.
Nun: No, not because of me. Because God willed it.
Jude: Nevermind, it was a mistake to come here.
Nun: You came because you feel lost.
Jude: I have always felt that way.
Nun: Not always.
Jude: No, not always, but lately yes. I have to fight one of my friends.
Nun: But you requested the match didn't you?
Jude: how do you know that?
Nun: A mother always knows.
Jude: You are not my mother.
Nun: oh son, I saw you grow up. I helped shelter you and your brother. I oversaw you both in school. I am about as close to a mother as you ever had.
Jude: Whatever.
Nun: I have never met Twilight. What is he like?
Jude: He’s concise. He has a good spirit, and he tells good stories.
Nun: But you don't believe he’s died and come back.
Jude: I believe he believes it.
Nun: You need to have faith.
Jude: I do. I have faith god will never help us. I have faith that God hates us as much as he loves us.
Nun: There is no hate but what we make.
Jude: Whatever.
Nun: You think of Twilight like a little brother don't you?
Jude: At times.
Nun: You want to help him.
Jude: Help him move on, move on from all the reincarnation bullshit.
Nun: Why is that bs?
Jude: Because no one comes back!
Nun: This is about your friend? Not Twilight
Jude: When you die, you die. There is no coming back.
(Jude stands up and leaves, walks out and slams the gray door behind him.)
This is where I stop
